I Choose Life is a national NGO in Kenya which is implementing currently the Journey4Life in Kenya.

Triggerise

Triggerise is a non-profit that provides rewards for positive behaviour using a platform accessed by feature and smart-phones, and even without a phone. Triggerise owns the Tiko Miles ecosystem.

Journey4Life implementation

The rollout of the journey4life with young people in schools and other structured settings.
Implementation of 12 sessions cycles for groups of max.20. Once cycle takes 18h contact time which can be spread over 3/4/6/12 weeks, depending on frequency.

Earning and Spending Tiko Miles

In the Tikosystem young people earn Tiko Miles by participating in the Journey4Life, giving feedback, referring a friend and accessing SRH services under the tsafe program. They can spend Miles on a variety of things they want such as food, drinks, lifestyle products from Tiko Traders.

Rating, feedback and tracking system

The young people use the Tiko Miles system to rate and feedback on both the Journey4Life, as well as the provision of SRH services and commodities, enabling valuable feedback.

Referal to the Tiko Miles/Journey4Life

Once young people complete the Journey4Life and start spending their Miles they refer their peers to the Tikosystem and to join the Journey4Life around them.

The Tiko Journey4Life offers a holistic experience for young teens (10-19) that encompasses sustainable behavioural change, access to SRH services and vetted opportunities that would enable young teens achieve their life goals.

Complementary added value of the Journey4Life

The Journey4Life improves the individual confidence, gender attitudes, and addresses social norms for the adolescent in a non-teaching but experiential environment. It is an inspiring journey of self-discovery and personal development that provides intrinsic incentives for young people to take leadership of their own life. With the enrollment in the journey4life, a young person starts using the Tiko Miles.

Complementary added value of the Tiko Miles acosystem (T-safe program)

Tiko Miles and the t-safe programme provide an environment for the adolescent to improve their quality of life through a reward system; Tiko Miles; and an enabling environment which links to youth friendly services (t-safe).

2 is better than 1

Combining these two successful approaches creates a platform for young people to be able to make safe and informed decisions and cultivate health-seeking behavior which results in taking ownership of their sexual and reproductive lives.

The young people participate in the Journey4Life and earn Tiko Miles as they progress through the sessions and small activations. They also learn they can earn Tiko Miles by visiting a service provider (an activity included in the Journey4Life)

Grow - new adolescents to join

As young people complete the Journey4Life and are active users of the Tiko Miles they can also earn Miles by referring new young people to the platform or the Journey4Life.

Get Tiko retailers

Tiko Traders are recruited on the platform by Triggerise.

Keep Tiko retailers to sell in the Tiko Ecosystem

Tiko Traders accept Tiko Miles as a form of payment for their products, increasing business. Their Tiko Miles are exchanged for cash weekly by Triggerise.

Intellectual resource - Journey4Life

The Journey4Life is an evidence-based innovative curriculum designed and developed by Dance4Life. It is a flexible model that can be contextualized to local needs and resources.

Human resources - Trained Champions4life

40 trained Champions4Life deliver the Journey4Life effectively. They work in pairs to facilitate a cycle of the 12 sessions.

Intellectual resource - Tiko Miles platform

A digital points platform which can be earned through attending the journey4life and accessing services. These points (Tiko Miles) can be used to buy goods from Tiko traders/retailers.

Human resources - Tiko Pro Agents

Tiko Pro provides an aspiring entrepreneur easy access to products and services she can promote, propose and sell in her community. The network is organically-grown and maintained by Triggerise. Tiko Pro promote SRH through the t-safe brand, and could refer young people to the Journey4Life.

Service/commodities providers

32 participating clinics and pharmacies in 3 pilot areas, with a national roll-out planned for A1 2018. Service providers are part of existing social franchises to assure quality of service provision.

Champions4Life in Schools/youth clubs

The Journey4Life and Tiko Miles rewards are delivered by Champions4life (which are also Tiko Miles Pros) in structured settings for young adolescents such as schools or local youth clubs

Mobile Tehcnology

The Tiko miles infrastructure is based on Movercado software. By sending a short code on enrollment/ tracking/ referral to services, an adolescent can earn points. This works for both smart and feature phones

Existing running projects

There is an existing running project of the Journey4Life in Kibera and Mukuru implemented by I Choose Life Africa for in-school and out-of-school youth.
These schools can be great for testing and refine the collaboration with the Tiko Miles system.

Estimated amount needed for each young person to go through the entire Journey4Life and to become active Tiko Miles users is 60 Euro

There is some cost sharing with UNICEF and CIFF from existing programmes.

Revenue Streams

Tiko Miles Ecosystem

Currently, tikosystems are entirely funded by donors. The growth strategy is to build in a revenue model, whereby businesses pay a fee to access the last mile distribution network and sell products to the target audience of the tikosystem.

Social franchise

dance4life's youth empowerment model - the Journey4Life is a licensed product. Organisations pay a symbolic license fee to use it, while dance4life ensures that it's contextualized, innovative and proves its effectiveness.

International and local foundations/agencies

The Journey4Life model is in small scale supported by UNICEF for one year and if proven to be effective this funding can be extended.

Other types of value

The platform creates social value by cultivating healthy behaviors which result in positive health outcomes and saving on health costs for the individual/family/community.
